Prevent care theft – come to the demo in Salzburg!
Cuts in the care sector have dramatic consequences for employees and patients. On November 25, thousands will take to the streets in Salzburg against it.

The budget cuts for 2026 announced by the Salzburg state government are causing growing uncertainty in the health and care sector. Particularly serious is the abolition of the care bonus, which was introduced in recognition of the demanding work of thousands of nursing and care workers. Now there is a threat of a massive step backwards - with consequences for employees, patients and the entire security of supply in Salzburg.

Care bonus cancelled: "The additional effort still remains"
The care bonus was more than a subsidy – it was a long overdue signal of appreciation. For Christian Freisinger, chairman of the works council at the hospital of the Barmherzige Brüder Salzburg, the decision of the state government is incomprehensible: "The additional expenditure in the nursing professions, which was compensated for with the bonus, still remains."
"The money for the care bonus comes from the federal government. Obviously, it is now to be used to plug budget holes."vida-Landesvorsitzender Salzburg
Cuts exacerbate staff shortage
The criticism from the companies is clear: The cut affects an occupational group that has been working at the breaking point for years anyway. "People who work in nursing are obviously no more than a cost factor in the eyes of the state government," says Freisinger. While the importance of nursing and care is invoked in ceremonial speeches, the reality is completely different: "Massive cuts in an industry that is already suffering from a shortage of personnel."
For vida state chairman Schinagl, it is clear: Those who abolish the care bonus not only reduce income, but also the attractiveness of the profession. "The measure will not help young people to opt for nursing and social professions."
Supply of the population endangered
Behind the scenes, there is already speculation about further measures - such as bed cuts. For Schinagl, this is an alarming signal: "If further savings are made now, the entire security of supply will wobble in the medium term." Long waiting times for examinations or operations are already a reality today. With fewer staff and even more stress, the problems become even more.
