Trade unionists handed over demands to Education Minister Christoph Wiederrkehr
Trade unions and works councils are campaigning for uniform training and job titles for kindergarten assistants throughout Austria.
Elementary Education
The field of tasks of kindergarten assistants is becoming more and more diverse. In addition to pedagogical basics, knowledge of first aid, hygiene and child development is also essential. Nevertheless, training and job titles currently differ greatly from state to state. "We finally need clear and uniform standards - so that equal work also means equal qualifications and recognition," emphasizes Melinda Hiebinger, deputy chairwoman of the works council in the area of kindergarten assistants, helpers and economic staff at Kinderfreunde.
Occupational protection and more support in everyday life
Another central point is the introduction of occupational protection for kindergarten assistants. This protection would be an important step towards making the profession more attractive in the long term and reducing the high burden on employees. In addition, vida is calling for additional staff to be provided for administrative tasks and cleaning work in order to relieve the pedagogical staff.
