Higher collective bargaining and actual salaries, faster achievement of more vacation days and the securing of the care allowance benefit numerous employees.

After three constructive rounds of negotiations, the time had come on Thursday evening: The negotiators of the trade unions GPA and vida and Diakonie agreed in Vienna on a new collective agreement for 8000 employees of the non-profit organization. The collective agreement applies throughout Austria to social and medical institutions, for example in the areas of people with disabilities, for people in old age, care, education, as well as integration and flight.

The result in detail

In essence, the result will bring an increase of 4 percent on collective bargaining and actual salaries, as well as allowances and supplements, from January 1, 2025. Employees in employee groups 6 and 7 can look forward to a further increase of 20 euros, those in employee group 8 will receive an extra 100 euros, provided they do not already receive compensation.

Crediting of previous periods of service for vacation

There is an improvement in the crediting of previous service periods for vacation: In order to achieve additional vacation days, previous service periods in the companies of the Diakonie employers' association are now also taken into account. With an additional collective agreement, the care subsidy has also been secured for 2025. Social workers in therapeutic facilities are also experiencing an improvement: they are assigned to higher employee group 8.

Robert Schütz, negotiator of the employers' association of the Diakonie, underlines the very constructive discussion and says: "It is of great importance for the entire industry that the social sector could be strengthened despite strained public budgets."

Thomas Lamprecht-Lasinger, negotiator of the GPA trade union, says: "In view of the demographic situation, the social sector urgently needs to be made more attractive. With this agreement, we are making an important contribution to this."

Michaela Guglberger, negotiator of the trade union vida, is particularly pleased about the increase in collective bargaining and actual salaries: "With the income increase of 4 percent, we are above rolling inflation and thus secure the purchasing power of the employees".

Update November 19, 2024

On 18.11., the second round of collective bargaining negotiations for the employees of the Diakonie took place, which the trade unions vida and GPA are negotiating with the employers. The vida negotiation team reports on very structured discussions in which the special features of the different professional groups were discussed. These range from personal assistance and elementary education to the elderly, the disabled and refugee aid.

In the course of the collective agreement negotiations, the employee representatives also handed over a petition with more than 300 signatures to the negotiating team of the employers' side. In doing so, they are calling for the abolition of wage group 2 A, which applies to the majority of paramedics and is paid very low at just over 2000 euros gross.

The next round of negotiations of the Diakonie collective agreement will take place on 5 December.

Update November 07, 2024

The collective agreement negotiations for Diakonie Österreich are in full swing. At the first round of negotiations on 7 November 2024, we presented our demands to the employers.

For us, it is clear that there must be no deterioration in working conditions. Instead, decisive improvements are needed to meet the growing challenges in social and care work.

The next round of collective bargaining negotiations for Diakonie employees will take place on 18.11.2024.

Our demands:

  • More money
Salaries and wages must rise to meet the demands of the professions and the increased cost of living. Especially for low incomes, we demand relief by valorizing allowances and supplements.
  • Care subsidy in the collective agreement
The care allowance is to be incorporated into the collective agreement and extended to all employees who need specific training for their work.
  • Improvements in allowances
Existing allowances are to increase. In addition, we demand an additional substitution allowance.
  • More holidays
Employees are to receive an additional week of vacation from their first day.
  • Further demands:
A long-term union demand is a 35-hour week with full wage compensation. Remuneration for night work and on-call times must also be improved in order to make the often stressful working hours fairer.
All previous periods of service within the same employers' association are to be recognised so that employees are fairly classified. Home helpers are to receive a special occupational group allowance.
