KV Sozialwirtschaft: Works meetings and rallies after insufficient supply
The patience of the employees is at an end – now we are noticeably increasing the pressure.
KV negotiation
Employers present insufficient offer
The second round of negotiations for the 130,000 employees in the private health, social and care sector (Social Economy Austria) was abruptly interrupted on Wednesday. The reason: The employer's offer from 2.5 percent over two years - i.e. 1.25 percent per year in real terms. This would mean that employees would have to accept a significant loss of real wages.
"Our colleagues have bills to pay, work professionally and hard and are not willing to accept loss of salary. We will not be fobbed off with handouts - the work in nursing, health and social care is worth more."Verhandlerin für die Gewerkschaft GPA
For the GPA and vida trade unions, it is clear that negotiations cannot continue like this.
Trade unions start works meetings and rallies
"The employer's offer is insufficient and not a basis for further negotiations today. Apparently, the employers are not aware of the seriousness of the situation," says Eva Scherz, negotiator for the GPA trade union.
The trade unions are calling works meetings throughout Austria to inform the employees and to pass strike resolutions as a precautionary measure. In addition, public rallies will take place to further increase the pressure.
Wages under inflation: "Absurd" in times of a shortage of skilled workers
"The idea that the social sector can function sustainably without salaries being adjusted to inflation is absurd. Without a corresponding wage, you will not find the urgently needed colleagues."vida-Chefverhandlerin SWÖ
The trade union vida is also outraged by the employer's offer.
"The employers' offer is massively below the inflation rate," criticizes Michaela Guglberger, vida negotiator.
Especially in the health and social sector, this attitude is incomprehensible. The industry is desperately looking for staff, thousands of jobs are unfilled, and demographic developments will further increase demand.
Fight for appreciation and fair pay continues
Employees in the social economy are considered the backbone of public care – from care to care for the disabled to child and youth welfare. This is precisely why they rightly expect fair wages that reflect their daily responsibilities and compensate for the rising cost of living.
With works meetings, rallies and possible further measures, the unions are now making it clear: An agreement below inflation is out of the question.
