New McDonald's collective agreement: More wages, more free time, more fairness

Good news for the approximately 9,600 employees of McDonald's Austria: The trade union vida and the trade union GPA have concluded a new, independent collective agreement that applies to both workers and employees. The new contract not only brings noticeable wage increases, but also a better work-life balance – a milestone for employees in the system catering industry.

Wages and apprentice pay rise significantly

The employer and the trade union vida agreed on a wage increase of 3.9 percent. Apprentices even benefit from an average increase of 4.1 percent. This will make working at McDonald's more attractive for career starters.

More free time and fairer bonuses

The new collective agreement brings a number of work-friendly regulations:

  • More Sundays off since July 2024
  • An additional day off for all employees
  • 30% night surcharge for work between 24:00 and 6:00
  • Calculation of the 6th working day – analogous to the hotel and catering industry

These measures provide more flexibility and protection against overloading.

More holidays through loyalty to the company

Employees receive additional vacation days much earlier than required by law:

  • From 6 years: +1 day of holiday
  • From 9 years: +2 additional days of vacation
  • From 12 years: +3 days of vacation
  • From 15 years: +5 additional vacation days (i.e. 30 days in total)

A strong sign of appreciation for many years of service.

Top-up for part-time work and crediting of previous periods of service

The right to a top-up is also new: Anyone who regularly works more than 20% above the part-time agreement will be able to switch to a full-time job more easily in the future.

For long-term employees, the crediting of previous service periods has also been improved. Years of apprenticeship and previous periods of service in the same company are taken into account as well as up to three years at other McDonald's locations or from the system catering industry.

More equality for parents

A strong signal for parents: In the future, employees on parental leave will be entitled to anniversary pay to the extent that corresponds to their original level of employment.

Conclusion: Progressive collective agreement for fair working conditions

With this new collective agreement, McDonald's, together with the trade union vida and GPA, is sending a clear signal: Fair pay, better leisure regulations and more recognition make work in system catering more attractive and sustainable.
