The fourth round of collective agreement negotiations for the approximately 10,000 employees of the Order Hospitals of Upper Austria on January 8, 2026 also ended without a result. The offer presented by the employers remains below rolling inflation and would mean a noticeable loss of real wages for employees. Improvements in the framework law remained marginal, and an offer to reduce working hours is completely missing.

Clear expectations of employees

In recent weeks, the employees have already sent a clear signal with over 6,800 signatures : They are demanding wage increases at least in line with inflation and a gradual reduction in working hours to 35 hours. In view of the increasing workload and growing burden in hospital operations, this demand is more than justified.

"The employers have hardly moved since the first round of negotiations. The offer currently on the table means a considerable loss of real wages for all those who ensure health care in Upper Austria on a daily basis. There is no offer at all when it comes to the reduction of working hours. The pace in hospitals has increased massively in recent years - and yet we are still one of the last occupational groups with a 40-hour normal working time," emphasizes Martina Reischenböck, health spokeswoman for the trade union vida Upper Austria.

"Therefore, we have no choice but to coordinate further measures with our colleagues."

Ultimatum expired – protest at the state parliament session

The 40-day ultimatum to employers and politicians expires on Monday, January 12. Since there is still no fair offer, the employees are now drawing consequences:

At the same time as the meeting of the Upper Austrian provincial government, a rally will take place in front of the Landhaus in Linz . There, the provincial councillor responsible for health, Christine Haberlander , has the last opportunity to avert further union measures by giving in.

At the same time, the employees of the Order Hospitals of Upper Austria will vote on the further course of action until January 13 in order to create the necessary pressure for movement in the negotiations.

The trade union vida expressly supports the rally. In addition to the health councillor, all parties in the state government are invited to take a stand on site and take responsibility.
