Cuts at Order Hospitals Vienna averted: 1,800 jobs secured
The announced savings at the religious hospitals in Vienna could be largely prevented by the massive commitment of the employees and the trade union vida.
We care together
Instead of planned cuts and the threat of cutting up to 1,800 jobs, it is now clear: There will be no active layoffs.
Broad resistance has an effect
The starting point was the City of Vienna's plan to save around 70 million euros in the area of religious hospitals. The employers reacted to this with a massive threat: 1,800 jobs were to be cut.
But the employees did not let this sit on them. Together with the trade union vida, resistance quickly formed - visibly, loudly and organized. Works councils, employees and supporters exerted pressure with actions and a broadly supported petition. More than 73 percent of the employees backed the demands.
Success through cohesion
This pressure had an effect: the planned cuts were largely averted. Crucially, there will be no active job cuts – a clear signal of what collective action can achieve.
The success underlines once again that good health care cannot be taken for granted, but is based on the people who work under often difficult conditions every day. Anyone who cuts here risks not only jobs, but also the quality of care.
Fight for better conditions continues
Despite this important stage success, much remains to be done. There is also a need for further improvements in the religious hospitals – for example in working conditions, relief and staffing.
At the same time, current developments in other areas – such as addiction support or homeless assistance – show that cutback plans are not an isolated case. This makes it all the more important to remain vigilant and continue to work together for good work and a strong public service.
