Protest against cuts in the health sector
The alliance Wir Sorge Gemeinsam, consisting of the trade union vida, employees from the health sector and activists from civil society, today sent a strong signal against the planned cuts at Vienna's Order Hospitals.
The central concern of the rally was the loss of 1,800 jobs threatened by the employers in response to the expected cuts of 75 million euros in the area of the religious hospitals. That is one in four jobs. At the Anton Proksch Institute, too, the reduction of up to 20% of jobs is on the table.
Our health care system is not a place for austerity. No job less – improve working conditions instead of additional burden!Aktivistin und Sprecherin des Bündnisses Wir Sorgen Gemeinsam
The effects would be drastic:
- massive additional burdens for the remaining staff
- longer waiting times
- noticeable deterioration of health care for patients in Vienna
I work hard with my colleagues every day to provide our patients with good care. We are already often reaching our limits. A few years ago, we were still applauded for our work. And now one in four of us is supposed to leave? This can't be!Diplomierte Gesundheits- und Krankenpflegerin, Franziskus Spital
Symbolic action makes the seriousness of the situation visible
At Human Rights Square, 180 work coats were put on - each one stood for ten endangered places. The action clearly showed what such job cuts would mean for the Viennese health care system: fewer staff, less care, less security.
