No railway operation without staff

"No train runs without people," says Tauchner - and refers to the central role of well-trained personnel for functioning rail traffic. vida sees it as its task to combine the announced investments in the maintenance and expansion of the railway infrastructure with clear demands for staff security.

"Railways are an innovative industry of the future that contributes far beyond the mobility sector to value creation in industry and sustainable employment," said Tauchner. This overall economic importance should not be jeopardized by cost-cutting measures for employees.

Work pressure is increasing – personnel requirements remain high

The pressure on staff is high: According to vida, around 4.5 million overtime hours and 400,000 unused vacation days are a clear indicator of overload. At the same time, the entire sector is facing enormous challenges due to a wave of retirements and high turnover. ÖBB alone is looking for up to 5,000 new skilled workers every year.

"There is an urgent need for more well-trained personnel to maintain the necessary performance – from train personnel to technology, from customer service to operations control," emphasizes Tauchner.

Good working conditions instead of regression

Anyone who wants to secure stable rail services in the long term, bring more freight traffic to the railways and promote climate protection in transport must invest in good, sustainable jobs now. "Shifting transports back to the road would be completely the wrong way in terms of transport and climate policy," warns the vida trade unionist.

Conclusion: Investments in personnel are investments in the future

The trade union vida therefore strengthens the federal government and the ÖBB in their commitment not to save on personnel. Because: The railway is only as strong as the people who keep it running.
