We care together

Gewerkschaft vida, Beschäftigte aus dem Gesundheitsbereich und Aktivist:innen aus der Zivilgesellschaft protestieren gegen die Kürzungen im Gesundheitsbereich

Health system at the limit

The Viennese healthcare system cares for over two million people and is already at the breaking point: Patients are waiting a long time for appointments and employees are working under enormous pressure. But instead of relief measures, the City of Vienna is making further cuts!

1,800 jobs on the verge of extinction

Savings are being made in Vienna's religious hospitals, which provide 20% of public health care: 75 million euros are to be saved here. In response, employers are threatening to cut staff – 1,800 jobs, i.e. one in four jobs, are at stake. At the Anton Proksch Institute , too, the reduction of up to 20% of jobs is on the table.

The cuts would massively increase the pressure on employees and jeopardize the quality of the health system on which we all depend.

Successful petition handover

Health is not a place for austerity, as confirmed by the almost 6,000 people who signed our petition against the planned cuts within a few weeks. The demands are clear: not a job less, but an improvement in working conditions!

On December 16, 2025, the employees handed over the petition to Vienna City Councillor for Health Peter Hacker. We trust that he and the employers will comply with our demands.

We fight for:

  • Better working conditions in the health sector
  • Fair wages
  • A good health system for all

The alliance "We Care Together" consists of the trade union vida, health workers and activists from civil society.
