What is care allowance and who is entitled?
Care allowance is financial support for people who are in need of care. It is paid out in monthly amounts of money, which vary depending on the level of care. Not only older people can be in need of care - children, adolescents or younger adults with serious illnesses can also be entitled to care allowance.
How much is the care allowance?
The entitlement depends on the need for care, which is measured in hours. There must be a monthly care requirement of more than 65 hours to be eligible for receipt. The amount of care required is determined during a medical examination. Attention is paid to how much help you need for everyday activities such as personal hygiene, dressing and undressing, preparing meals, shopping, washing, cooking, cleaning, etc. The monthly care allowance is determined in one of a total of 7 levels, depending on the monthly care hours required.
Applying for care allowance – step by step
- Apply for care allowance: online or directly at the responsible pension insurance institution such as PVA or BVAEB
- Prepare documents: Collect up-to-date medical documents (doctor's letters, hospital reports, care diary) to document the need for care.
- Medical assessment: If necessary, the doctor will also come to your home.
- Wait for the decision: After reviewing the application for care allowance, you will receive a written notification of the decision (approval or rejection).
Attention: Your application has been rejected or the classified care level does not correspond to the actual, documented care needs? You have the option of filing an appeal.
