Broad approval

"87 percent of the participating vida members among the railway workers accepted the result of the railway collective bargaining negotiations with a broad majority. The result of the survey is binding for us," says Gerhard Tauchner, Deputy Director of the Supervisory Board. Chairman of the railway department in the trade union vida and vida-KV chief negotiator for the railway sector, among the members. The goal set by the union, acceptance of the result with a two-thirds majority among the members in the railway sector, was thus far exceeded.

"The KV result could be achieved thanks to the great support of our members. It was therefore a matter of course for us to present the result of the negotiations to them for a vote."
Gerhard Tauchner, Vorsitzender vida-Fachbereich Eisenbahn und KV-Verhandlungsleiter

From December 14 to 15 at 11:59 p.m., we called on our vida members to vote on the outcome of the negotiations. The counting process was plausibly checked by a chartered accountant. 6,772 valid votes were cast. Of these, 87.1 percent voted in favor of acceptance, and 12.9 percent against.

The key points of the outcome of the negotiations

  • The core of the negotiation result of 15 December 2022 is the fixed amount on collective bargaining and actual wages demanded by vida to relieve the lower and middle salaries, by which the monthly incomes of the 50,000 railway workers will now gradually increase.
  • Starting in December 2022, the fixed amount will increase in steps to 480 euros by February 2024.
  • For 2022 and 2023, this results in an average salary increase of 8.9 to 10.8 percent.
  • In the lowest income ranges, starting salaries will increase by 17.3 percent as early as December 2022.
  • According to the collective bargaining agreement, apprentice incomes will increase by 8 percent, but at least by 100 euros retroactively from December 1, 2022.
  • In addition, the allowances and ancillary fees will be secured in value by an increase of 8 percent.

Cost-of-living bonus for employees

In order to counter the burning issue of inflation, it was also agreed between the social partners that all railway companies will pay out at least 500 euros as an inflation premium for 2022. An inflation bonus of 250 euros has also been set for apprentices for 2022. For 2023, the social partners are calling on companies to take advantage of the possibility of an inflation premium.
